I like the idea of principle driven information security. However, road safety is a well understood domain and it is easy to get a diverse range of individuals to agree or negotiate common actions. How will this idea work in an evolving field like information security?

Good question. I base my thinking on the fact that the need to secure information is one of the oldest concerns of humans. Early civilisations had their ciphers, middle ages had the signet (where it was punishable by death to kill the messenger) and this continues into IT today. My opinion is that InfoSec is older than traffic engineering and there is a rich and long history of this principle.
